"Little Boy"

Just before the beginning of World War II on August 2, 1939, Albert Einstein wrote to the President of the United States telling him about efforts made by Nazi Germany to purify uranium which would mean that it could be used to create an atomic bomb. Shortly after learning this information, the US Government started the construction of the Manhattan Project led by Dr. Robert Oppenheimer. The Manhattan Project was the code name for the project committed to the creation of the atomic bomb.

The atomic bomb had a great amount of raw power upon it's explosion which resulted from the sudden release of energy created when splitting the nuclei of atoms of heavy elements such as uranium. The bomb was tested in Los Alamos, New Mexico on July 14, 1945. The bomb produced an explosion equal to 20,000 tons of TNT.
